Product Description
Type fountain pen and mechanical pencil
Product Name Lady Sheaffer VIII set -- part of the Skripsert line
Manufacturer and Year Sheaffer, USA - 1959
Length 5-3/8"
Filling System Sheaffer cartridges only. We have tried several different Sheaffer converters and none of them fit. We will include some cartridges. The pencil works perfectly and takes .9mm leads; twist the top half to extend or retract the lead. An eraser is located under the upper portion, and it's likely the original one.
Color The body is gold metal with an engraved "balicon" pattern filled with black. The section of the fountain pen is black. Most of the Lady Sheaffers were named after different types of fabric, but this was called "balicon", and according to PenHero the word has no dictionary definition.
Nib FINE Steel Stylpoint (recessed) nib. Originally gold masked, but most of the masking has worn off and there is some pitting. See photos below.
Condition Very nice condition for the set. The fountain pen looks really nice in hand, but under magnification we see some issues. The cap looks like it's been in a few fights, with lots of tiny little scratches, and areas of the clear coating flaking off. There is a dent in the top of the cap, and some roughness around that. The section has some scratching, and two sets of initials are engraved on it -- "EMW" on the right, and "MPB" on the left. The surface of the nib has some light pitting and corrosion, but the pen writes well and smoothly. The barrel looks much better than the cap. There are still some areas of the clear coat that have flaked away, as well as some scuffs and scratches. The end of the barrel has scratching from posting the cap. The mechanical pencil has fared much better over the years. The surface of the cap and barrel are both quite smooth, with minimal scratching and very little flaking in the outer coat. The mechanism is working very smoothly.
