Product Description
Type Limited Edition Fountain Pen, with incorrect signature. These pens were recalled from dealers, but some had already been purchased and were "out in the wild".
Product Name Montblanc Writers Edition Alexandre Dumas. #05645/20000. The Dumas model had an initial design error where it included the wrong Alexandre Dumas's signature on the cap; the son was also a writer, but "The Three Musketeers" and "The Count of Monte Cristo" were the work of the father. The edition was originally supposed to have 15000 pens sold individually and another 5000 sold in sets. It's hard to tell how many pens were sold before the recall, but some discussions suggest that only about 8000 were made before the mistake was discovered. The corrected pens had an "N" appended to their serial number. A comparison of the signatures and a description of what happened can be found here.
Manufacturer and Year Montblanc, Germany -- 1996.
Length 5-3/8".
Filling System Piston filler.
Color Deep brown cap, section, and end piece with a white marble body. In very bright sunlight, the brown color is apparent, but in hand they appear black. (The booklet describes the pen as deep brown resin, so we know the color is not the result of fading) It has lots of gold plated trim and the fine bands have designs. The signature is to the right of the clip.
Nib Fine 18k Nib. It's very smooth. We generally find Montblanc nibs to run narrow. The nib is decorated with rhodium masking and a fleur-de-lis imprint. The masking looks great.
Condition Near mint condition, in box, with paperwork. This is a hefty pen with a gorgeous color pattern and design. The cap and barrel have light handwear visible under magnification. The barrel and trim are beautiful. The imprints are clear. The box is in excellent condition, and the booklet includes the original dealer stamp.
