Product Description
Type Fountain pen
Product Name Portable Writer in Aka-Tamenuri
Manufacturer and Year Nakaya, Japan -- Current Model
Length 5-15/16"
Filling System Nakaya cartridge or converter fill. The pen is fitted with a converter, and there is a box of blue-black cartridges included in the box.
Color This is the Aka-tamenuri finish, which is red urushi with brighter red breaking through at the edges, where the top layers were polished away. These pens are intended to age well and become more colorful as the years go by. Gold clip.
Nib Fine 14k nib writes very smoothly.
Condition Excellent condition in box. The clip has some polishing marks. There are two or three very fine bubbles (little bumps) on the section ONLY, which we've seen before on similar Nakaya models (see note below). The pen also has kanji maki-e near the end of the barrel, which we are unable to translate. The rest of the pen looks fantastic - shiny and glossy with light scratching.
Ships in softwood box with pen kimono, and an outer mulberry paper box.
Nakaya is the luxury line of Platinum and their cartridges and converters are interchangeable.
Note on urushi irregularities: we have personal experience with this same sort of bubbling on the section of a Nakaya. Our research has suggested that it may be the result of improper curing. It is apparently possible to send the pen back to the manufacturer to be stripped and reapplied, which would be a months-long process. The bubbling does not affect the writing performance of the pen, and in our experience the surface of the section has remained stable for several years. We've personally accepted it in the spirit of "wabi-sabi" - the beauty of imperfecton.
