Product Description
Type Fountain pen
Product Name Precious Wood - Kabazaiku Cherry Bark
Manufacturer and Year Sailor, Japan. This was either made circa 2014 or 2020. (We find these pens mentioned around those years - both were limited batches)
Length 5-1/4"
Filling System Takes a Sailor converter, or cartridges. A Sailor converter is installed.
Color The barrel and cap have a veneer of cherrybark wood over black resin, and gold-plated trim. There is a 5/16" wide cap band engraved with "Sailor Japan" and "Denshiro". Denshiro refers to the Fujiki Denshiro store, a kabazaiku craftsmanship store known for its high quality workmanship for over six generations. Sailor used Denshiro techniques and materials in making this pen.
Nib MEDIUM 14k gold nib, marked "H-M" for "hard medium". It's smooth and lovely.
Condition Excellent condition. There is light microscratching and handwear on the resin parts and trim. The trim all looks excellent, with no brassing or plating wear.
NOTE: There are fine cracks in the light colored sections of the veneer on both barrel and cap, and you see some roughness on the edges of the seam which runs the length of the pen. We have not examined a new version of this pen, so we can only guess about the original condition. Some of the fine cracks may be natural variations in the wood, or perhaps the wood shrinking over time; it may also be some combination of these factors. (Please see photos below.)
You'll want to take care in handling this pen. The original instructions cautioned against exposing the pen to "high humidity" or "dry conditions", so you will need to avoid both.
This shows the seam where the edges of the bark were joined.
