Product Description
Type Combination fountain pen and pencil
Product Name Penselpen
Manufacturer and Year Schnell Pens, USA - c. 1930s (one of the patent numbers imprinted on the pen has a date of 1929)
Length 5-7/8" long
Filling System Slide lever filler - rather than lifting the lever to compress the ink sac, you slide it forward to release it so that it can be worked to compress the sac and then release it back to suck in the ink. Slide the lever towards the pencil end to lock it into place. For the pencil portion, twist the nose cone.
Color Black with gold trim. The clip is unusual; it's in the shape of an airplane, and we have read that Mr. Schnell was apparently friendly with Charles Lindbergh and modeled the clip after the Spirit of St. Louis.
Nib Fountain pen has a fine semi-flexible nib. We think it is 14k but it is not marked, and there are scratches where you'd see 14k normally written. See writing sample below. Pencil half takes "thick" 1.1 mm leads, which are extended by twisting the nose cone.
Condition Excellent condition. There are some tool marks on the nib. All of the trim has brassing around the edges. Handwear on the body, but no cracks or significant scratches. The barrel is personalized with "Geo. D Anderson" and an address and phone number.
Fun detail: this thing really took care of all your needs; there's a concealed eraser for the pencil half! A tiny stump of original eraser is there, and is just about as hard/brittle as you'd expect.
