Product Description
Type Lever filling vintage fountain pen, restored and working well.
Product Name Balance 5-30 (identified by the 5-30 nib). This is one of the early "convertible" pens which has a piece on the end of the barrel which unscrews and allows you convert the pen to a desk model if you have the long taper. Model K5-30TCD according to the 1930 Sheaffer catalog. It's not too common, in that we see these convertibles usually in the larger Lifetime Balance models as opposed to this smaller 5-30 size.
Manufacturer and Year Sheaffer, made in USA -- 1930-32, based off of the clip.
Length 5-1/2".
Filling System Lever filler. We've restored it with a new sac and it's working very well.
Color Black and pearl cap and barrel with gold filled trim. The barrel has ambered.
Nib FINE Sheaffer's 5-30 gold nib. The nib has a groove on the left tine. something which occurs if a pen has been used a lot to make straight lines using a ruler as a guide. It shouldn't affect writing but it might make the nib a bit more prone to breakage if it is dropped. The nib also has a wrinkle on the right shoulder. It's very smooth and fairly firm with nice tipping material.
Condition Excellent condition. The imprint is clear and the trim looks great with brassing on just the ball end. Bite marks on the cap, and to a lesser extent on the tail piece. The coloring on the cap is quite nice but you see considerable ambering on the barrel. The pen is fully restored and working very well.
