Product Description
Type Combination lever fill fountain pen + mechanical pencil
Product Name Unknown
Manufacturer and Year W. S. Hicks, New York -- 1930s.
Length 5-1/4"
Filling System Lever filler, we've fully restored it with a new sac. The pencil side takes 1.1mm (or "thick") leads, which it extends via the traditional twist mechanism (you twist the cone, which is a bit stiff). We'll include a small packet of leads. Also of note: the pencil end unscrews to reveal a small eraser nub. The one that's there is hardened, but we suspect you could find or carve a replacement to fit.
Color Gold of some sort, though there are no hallmarks to more precisely ID it. We've had solid gold Hicks pens before and they were always clearly marked, so this is most likely gold filled. There is an engraved pattern of rings, some narrowly spaced and some wider spaced.
Nib FINE nib is simply marked "W.S. Hicks New York 14k 3". It's a smooth writer and just slightly springy.
Condition Excellent condition. This is a nice looking combo pen/pencil. There is light handwear and scratching all over. We do see some deep curved scratches at the base of the section, made by the threads inside the cap. The front edge of the section, nearest the nib, is a bit rough and has brassing. There are shallow dents on the body of both pen and pencil ends. The cap lip also rubs a bit, and we see scratches from this on the pen end, and there is brassing on the pencil end. The cap has brassing around the top edge. The clip has tiny dings on the face, and plating wear along the sides. There is also brassing on the ball end of the clip, on the hump and around the top edge.
