Product Description
Type Vintage lever filling fountain pen with matching pencil.
Product Name This is the small "Starlet" version of the Stalwart pen.
Manufacturer and Year Waterman, made in Canada (the pen body is marked, but the pencil is not)-- circa late 1940s. Both pieces have the high, short military clips. The fountain pen nib was made in England.
Length Both fountain pen and pencil are 4-3/4" long. The pencil has a convex or dimpled rivet that secures the clip onto the cap, allowing you to distinguish it in a pocket.
Filling System Lever filler. We've restored it with a new sac and it's working very well. The pencil takes 1.1mm leads.
Color Nurse's set - ivory marbled. Gold plated trim with a two thin cap bands. The color on the pen's barrel (and to a lesser extent, the cap) has mellowed to a warm parchment shade. The pencil looks great, with minimal fading or yellowing.
Nib MEDIUM FLEXIBLE Waterman's Ideal 14k 2-A nib (England) is smooth with great tipping material. It's nicely flexible, with line variation from medium to broad with just a light pressure. It's not a wet noodle, it has really good springback and is very responsive.
Condition Excellent condition. The set includes a matching leather slip case. The case has age-appropriate stains and wear, but the leather has held up quite well over the last 70+ years. The fountain pen is in excellent condition. The barrel has a bit of discoloration, but the pearly character of the material is still easily evident. The end of the barrel has some surface crazing (not penetrating to the inner part of the barrel), and some moderate scratching. The lever and housing have plating wear around the edges. There is very slight staining in the cap threads. The cap has a crack in the cap lip, about 1/4" long, which ends at the upper band; we have a closeup shot of this area in the pictures. The top of the cap also has crazing around the clip rivet. The cap bands have brassing, and there is brassing and plating wear on the clip. The imprint is very worn down. The pencil has moderate scratching. The color of is close to perfect. There's some of the tiny cosmetic surface cracks on the very end of the barrel. The clip and rivet have plating wear and brassing. The cone has brassing and some pitting. The imprint on the pen is largely smoothed out, and there is no imprint on the pencil. The set is fully restored and working well.
Both pieces are personalized as "V. Miller."
