Product Description
Type Vintage lever filling fountain pen and mechanical pencil set.
Product Name Unknown. There's no marking on the barrel, but the nib is marked.
Manufacturer and Year Welsh Mfg. Co., Providence, RI -- circa 1930s. The company was a manufacturer and made a variety of products, including a line of low end but very colorful fountain pens with steel nibs.
Length The fountain pen is 5" long. The mechanical pencil is a tiny bit shorter at 4-15/16".
Filling System Lever filler. We've restored it with a new sac and it's working very well. The pencil takes 1.1mm leads, which extend and retract by twisting the nose cone. The mechanism is a little bit stiff but does work.
Color Wild! Multicolored marble pattern in shades of black, brown, ivory, yellow, with tiny occasional pops of green, red, and blue...and chunks of black and white striped or cross-hatched material. Occasional small pieces of green or blue yellows, greens, cream, coral, burgundy, and blue (see photos). Parts of the plastic were clear and are still clear on the cap, whereas on the barrel have turned a foggy tan color (probably due to off-gassing of the sac). Thinly gold plated trim with a thin cap band.
Nib MEDIUM steel nib marked "Welsh Mfg. Co. Stainless 14kt. Gold Plated Providence R. I." It's smooth and will be a good writer.
Condition Excellent condition. The fountain pen has light scratching and wear on the cap and barrel. The plating is fairly worn on all of the trim, and there are some dots of pitting on the cap band and clip. The pencil is in similar condition. The clip has dots of pitting. The nose cone has plating wear around the tip. No cracks or chips, dings or dents, or personalization. The pen is fully restored and both pieces are working well.
